Ras Al Khaimah Continues Leading Environmental Campaign for Beach Cleanups March 07,2018

Ras Al Khaimah continues its wide-scale campaign for cleaning the marine environment of plastic waste, which is carried out via cooperation between the RAK Waste Management Agency and the Environment Protection and Development Authority in order to preserve beaches in the Emirates and raise awareness in the community by encouraging people to participate in these campaigns’ volunteer work.

The first campaign at Marjan Beach saw considerable turnout, with over 300 volunteers from the UAE collecting over 1,320 kilograms of waste in one hour, with the volunteers, who work at government establishments and companies, showing a high level of enthusiasm.

The Waste Management Agency launched the “RAK Recycles” initiative for recycling in June 2017, followed by weekly campaigns for beach cleanups in Ras al-Khaimah relying on small groups of volunteers.

Janet Hartzenberg, awareness coordinator of RAK Recycles campaign, said that the role of the campaign isn't just about removing large amounts of plastic waste from beaches; it also aims to raise awareness in the community about the importance of sustainability and encouraging people to recycle.

In order to achieve tangible results and protect marine environment on the long run, the Waste Management Agency and the Environment Protection and Development Authority called on people to volunteer for the cleanup campaigns that will be organized on March 24th and April 4th.
